Thomas Rasmussen, Ph.D., MSC, CST-D
Director of Research for Upledger Institute International

Thomas Rasmussen has a Ph.D. Degree in Medical Science and has worked with medical science and evidence-based medicine since 1994. In addition, he has a broad scientific background with a MSc in Chemistry, a BSc in Biochemistry and a BSc in Biology.

Thomas has been a leading scientist publishing over 50 studies in international journals and with more than 100 abstracts and proceedings at international conferences. Thomas continues his research work with focus on the craniosacral system. Thomas owns a private clinical practice (Clinic for Manuel Medicine), helping patients with CranioSacral Therapy and other IAHE modalities. Thomas is an International Teacher for the Upledger Institute International, and teaches the CST classes, as well as The Brain Speaks 1 and 2 classes. He has also developed a class with Upledger Institute International called Beyond the Cranial Base.

Director of Research Responsibilities include:

  • Determine what research would best support Upledger CST.
  • Condense research down to what could be relevant in the Upledger curriculum.
  • Conduct research and collaborate with other research teams to forward CST research.
  • Support UII in communication about research related to CST.

The Integrity of Dr. Upledger's Work

Knowledge is ever-changing. What Dr. Upledger brought into our present world was a new paradigm in treatment and that does not change. The paradigm is universal at all times and is unchanged by the shifting knowledge.

Clinical Studies

For all the areas of my responsibility mentioned above, when it is about the study of the clinical applications of Upledger Cranial Sacral Therapy, it will always be with the understanding clarified by Dr. Upledger with his following words:

Every session of CranioSacral Therapy, Energy Cyst Release, SomatoEmotional Release, and Therapeutic Imagery and Dialogue requires, if it's to be successful, the participation of the therapist. If the therapist does not blend with and become one with the patient, the treatment session is not one of those named here. - Dr. Upledger, Cell Talk.

In other words, as we meld and blend, become one with the patient, and follow the treatment plan of the inner wisdom of the patient, we can never be objective or follow a planned technical protocol given for a study.

The types of clinical studies of interest for Upledger CranioSacral Therapy are clinical outcome studies without the classical protocol control, as treatment with that type of control is no longer an Upledger CranioSacral Therapy session.

Experimental Studies

In Dr. Upledger's own words. "I have worn the moccasins of the rigorous experimentalist." Dr. Upledger performed extensive research over the years, and he spent a lot of time reading and collecting science literature. He then masterfully distilled that down into something useable and straightforward for us to teach in the seminars and to use in the daily clinic. He also gave us his first books that included the experimental world, as well as the structure and function part of his developing therapy.

As the Director of Research for UII, I will continue to explore, filter, condense and conduct experimental research about Upledger CranioSacral Therapy. The aim is to have clear and up-to-date knowledge about the craniosacral system.

The Role of Knowledge and Experiential Versus the Experimental Reality

Dr. Upledger pointed to the importance of being clear about the difference between the experimental and experiential.

Knowledge is our awareness, our understanding or the information that we have obtained by experience or study. Knowledge from scientific research is one kind of knowledge, and science is organized knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions. Another type of knowledge is the one obtained by experience; this is a well-known knowledge for us as therapists, as every cranial session gives us experiences that add to our knowledge. The two types of knowledge may oppose each other or support each other, or the relationship may be absented in our reality.

Here my role is to help filter the growing scientific knowledge with possible usage for Upledger CranioSacral Therapy.

Upledger CranioSacral Therapy and a World of Changing Knowledge

Dr. Upledger used a tree as a model for our CranioSacral Therapy. In the roots, we have all the physical-based parts. The CST roots converge to form the tree trunk, which is SomatoEmotional Release (SER). From the trunk, the branches coming off are therapeutic image and dialogue, self-awareness, channeling, body-mind-spirit integration, etc. The tree model shows the interdependence between the root system, the trunk, the branches and the leaves. The tree model beautifully illustrates how profound Dr. Upledger's CranioSacral Therapy is, and that a therapy session is primarily an experiential process for both patient and therapist.

The experiential universe is like a deep endless ocean, and the possible experiences will never be explained or illuminated by experimental science, so why do we need to look at or include experimental science in our CranioSacral Therapy world?

Dr. Upledger wrote,
"It is the (SER) trunk that has led us to the most exalted of facilitative and healing modes that we see as branches of various sizes and shapes."
"Without the (CST) root system, the (SER) trunk would not exist."

The constant changing knowledge may change some roots of the tree; it may even grow new roots, allowing Dr. Upledger's tree to grow in our world. Still, it will not change Dr. Upledger's CranioSacral Therapy, as he gave us something universal.

My job here is to see if the developing sciences may be of help to nourish some roots of Dr. Upledger's tree.
