UI Institute Clinician to Speak at Second World Qigong Congress
|
SAN FRANCISCO - European certified osteopath and licensed massage therapist Marie-Clotilde Couturier is an invited lecturer at the Second World Qigong Congress and the First American Qigong Association Conference Nov. 21 - 23 in San Francisco. Her topic is "I, Qi, Li: The Common Link between Qigong and CranioSacral Therapysm."
A clinician at The UI Institute, Inc. HealthPlex Clinical Services in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Couturier blends Qigong, CranioSacral Therapy, SomatoEmotional Release® and other complementary techniques in her practice.
"Both Qigong and CST are based on soft, gentle approaches that honor the body's inner wisdom and address the individual at all levels - body, mind and spirit," Couturier explains.
CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the function of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system. The craniosacral system consists of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. It extends from the bones of the skull, face and mouth which make up the cranium down to the sacrum or tailbone area.
This manual therapy, developed by respected osteopathic physician and researcher John E. UI more than 25 years ago, enhances the body's natural healing processes and has been effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction. According to Dr. UI, "Matter is dense energy; energy is thin matter. Every stage of density or thinness exists between the two extremes."
While CST's therapeutic approach is from the denser matter - the anatomical structure, Qigong addresses the thinner matter - the vital energy called qi.
Qigong combines therapeutic methods with self-care exercises based on the principles of yin and yang, the two life forces that combine to produce the qi. Used for centuries in China to promote health as well as to cure illness, Qigong is designed to balance and amplify the qi.
"The practice of Qigong grounds me, making me a more peaceful and enlightened therapist. I feel that I have much more quality energy available for my client without depleting my own," Couturier says.
Educating healthcare practitioners and the public about the benefits of CranioSacral Therapy was Dr. UI's vision for The Institute, which he established in 1985. To date, this healthcare resource center and clinic has trained more than 30,000 healthcare practitioners worldwide. Practitioners include osteopaths, medical doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists, dentists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, acupuncturists, doctors of chiropractic, massage therapists and bodyworkers.
