PALM BEACH GARDENS, FLA. -- One of the most exciting aspects of the current healthcare revolution is growing interest in strategies that educate and empower patients.
Patients who are taught to use their own imagination, intuition, decision-making and planning capabilities are better able to deal with life crises, chemical dependency, anxiety and depression. Chronic health, stress-related and emotional issues often respond favorably to this technique. These self-directed strategies are highly prized by patients themselves, their healthcare providers and third-party payers.
David Bresler, Ph.D., and Martin Rossman, M.D. established the Academy for Guided Imagery in 1989 to train health professionals in the clinical skills of Interactive Guided ImagerySM, so they in turn could instruct their patients in these empowering techniques.
Dr. Bresler, a health psychologist and board-certified acupuncturist, is the founder and former director of the UCLA Pain Control Unit. He is the author of more than 100 publications, including the book, Free Yourself from Pain (Simon & Schuster, 1979).
Dr. Rossman is a clinical associate in the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco and adjunct faculty at the California School for Professional Psychology, Alameda/Berkeley. He is the author of Healing Yourself: A step-by-step Program for Better Health through Imagery (Pocket Books, 1989).
"Imagery is a two-way language between the body and the mind," Dr. Rossman says. "Imagery helps you understand signals the body is sending so you can help it restore a healthy balance. It's more than mind over matter."
Imagery can have profound effects on the major regulatory systems of the body {Special Char 45 in Font "Symbol"} the autonomic nervous, endocrine, circulatory and immune systems, Dr. Rossman says. The technique also is believed, according to Dr. Bresler, to be the most rapidly available route to insight and self-awareness.
Interactive Guided Imagery may prove to be an essential tool for the healthcare professional in today's era of managed care with its controls on the number of visits covered by third-party payers. The technique is particularly applicable for addressing mind/body issues in medicine, nursing and counseling situations.
Interactive Guided Imagery is now available as an accredited, self-paced home study program that includes three video and/or nine audio instructional tapes, two experiential audio tapes, a companion notebook with lecture outlines, and a 491-page manual of current articles, research, scripts and patient handouts. This 12-hour program teaches the health professional powerful, fundamental skills to help patients work successfully with imagery.
"This course will enhance a healthcare practitioner's ability to work with mental, emotional and spiritual issues that come up during the course of interaction with patients," Dr. Rossman says.
Since its founding, the Academy has taught this innovative and well-grounded approach to more than 10,000 health professionals in the medical and mental health disciplines.
