Clinical Services
and Intensive Therapy Programs
Osteopathic physician John E. Upledger, who
pioneered a method of care called CranioSacral
Therapy (CST) in the 1970s, founded the Upledger
Institute HealthPlex Clinical Services in
Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, in 1985.
The mainstay of the therapies offered at Upledger Clinic CST is a light-touch manual therapy
that addresses restrictions in the craniosacral
system - the membranes and fluid that protect
the brain and spinal cord. This vital system
extends from the bones of the skull, face
and mouth, which make up the cranium, down
to the tailbone area, or sacrum. Since the
craniosacral system directly impacts the central
nervous system, an imbalance or obstruction
there can cause any number of sensory, motor
or neurological disabilities. CranioSacral
Therapy helps correct those restrictions so
that the body can release the effects of stress
naturally.
Once the source of a patient's problem
is isolated, CST can be combined with other
therapies to facilitate the most effective
results. These may include SomatoEmotional
Release®, Therapeutic Imagery &
Dialogue, Visceral Manipulation, Mechanical
Link, Lymph Drainage Therapy, acupuncture,
acupressure, counseling services, and massage
therapy.
Like all the therapies offered at Upledger Clinic,
CST is based on the philosophy that the
greatest instruments for healing are our
own bodies and minds - and the greatest
positive change comes from a joint effort
between practitioner and patient.
The Upledger Clinic Intensive Therapy
Approach
Upledger Clinical Services offers both
individual sessions and one- and two-week
outpatient programs that provide intensive
therapy for special needs. These programs
offer some of the most innovative healthcare
currently available anywhere in the world.
Each program features a specially selected
team of Upledger clinicians and skilled
visiting therapists working together to
alleviate the specific health concerns of
each individual. Participants benefit from
hands-on therapy that includes both one-on-one
and multiple-therapist sessions, as well
as supportive group sessions.
The focus of the intensive approach is
to find and resolve a person's core problem
so that his or her adaptational energies
can be used for more constructive purposes.
This approach has proven to be successful
for many who have been using their energies
to adapt and survive rather than grow and
thrive.
Essentially, when a person experiences
a trauma or pathology, the body, mind and
spirit adapts by building layers of defense
around the site of the dysfunction. Through
gentle hands-on therapy, these layers are
uncovered and the root cause revealed. From
here therapists can work to eliminate the
problem and help bring the body to optimum
performance levels.
This process is aided by the extended and
concentrated treatment each person receives.
When sessions are spaced out on a weekly
or monthly basis, the body is more likely
to refer back to its previous adapting mode
in the intervening time. By providing hands-on
therapy for several hours a day, several
days in a row, the reforming of old adaptational
patterns is countered.
The Conditions Addressed
The nature of the therapies used at the
Upledger clinic make the intensive
therapy programs beneficial for a wide range
of conditions. The following represent some
of the numerous health concerns addressed.
Brain & Spinal Cord Dysfunction.
Intensive therapy is used to help those
restricted from functioning at optimal levels
due to problems within the brain and spinal
cord. The program has earned an international
reputation for providing comprehensive rehabilitation
for conditions including: traumatic brain
and spinal cord injuries, seizures, developmental
delays, chronic pain, headaches, neuralgia,
temporomandibular joint syndrome, reflex
sympathetic dystrophy, strokes, post-operative
rehabilitation, cerebral palsy, birth injuries
and trauma, near-drowning and other accidents,
degenerative disorders such as multiple
sclerosis, neurovascular or immune disorders
such as cancer, chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia,
and many others.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
PTSD is a condition that may be experienced
by anyone who has undergone a traumatic
experience. Contrary to popular belief,
PTSD is not purely a psychological problem;
it has deep roots in physiological changes
that accompany trauma. In our years of research
and treatment of PTSD, we have encountered
numerous related symptoms that respond well
to hands-on intensive CST: insomnia, hypervigilance,
intrusive thoughts, flashbacks, panic attacks,
long-term fear, depression and suicidal
thoughts. PTSD is not an incurable disorder.

Learning Disabilities in Children.
Numerous studies suggest that learning-disabled
children often bear structural dysfunction's
that may be impeding their cognitive growth.
This intensive therapy approach offers children,
parents and caregivers innovative ways to
meet these particular challenges. Using
CranioSacral Therapy, therapists first evaluate
the structural restriction patterns in the
craniosacral system that may be impairing
function and behavior. Then they help to
release those restrictions that may be hindering
learning and performance. At the same time,
they help children to identify inner resources
that enable them to make more appropriate
behavioral choices.
Autism. This complex condition can
present a myriad of symptoms, including
extreme social withdrawal, language impairments,
erratic or repetitive behavior, anxiety,
fearfulness or pervasive developmental delays.
It's also a condition that often responds
well to CST and related techniques. In fact,
Dr. Upledger has testified at a Government
Reform Committee meeting of the U.S. House
of Representatives on the effectiveness
of CST in treating autism. Using CST as
the main modality, therapists work to promote
physical, cognitive and social developmental
gains in the autistic child. Family members
and caregivers are also trained in ways
they can reinforce the child's progress
at home.
Addictive Behaviors. Many people
who participate in traditional dependency
programs say they continue to be burdened
by the same difficult compulsions - even
if they no longer engage in the addictive
behavior. The intensive therapy approach
supports patients in their quests to calm
their minds and bodies. The therapies performed
can also serve as a valuable addition to
other vital, conventional programs.
Grief and Depression. Losing someone
you love or anything you hold dear can lead
to a deep sense of grief. This can bring
about structural lesion patterns that can
keep the nervous system repressed, resulting
in illness, pain and sorrow. Many people
are able to work through the pain of loss
within a year or two. But for others the
grip of worthlessness and despondency seems
to go on and on. Here at Upledger we've
discovered that gentle, supportive CranioSacral
Therapy can be extremely effective in releasing
this type of physical, emotional and spiritual
pain.
Therapist Rejuvenation. Healthcare
practitioners are invited to turn the tables
to be on the receiving end of the therapeutic
process. With a team of skilled colleagues
at their sides, they're treated to CranioSacral
Therapy, SomatoEmotional Release and other
innovative approaches tailored to their
personal needs. As old issues and unproductive
patterns clear out, they experience the
relaxation and rejuvenation they need -
along with a renewed sense of clarity and
inner peace. Therapists can then return
to their practices re-focused and able to
perform at peak efficiency.

New! Dolphin-Assisted
Therapy Intensive Program
In 1996 The Upledger Foundation first began
exploring the benefits of dolphin-assisted
therapy. The results were so encouraging
that we started searching for the optimal
environment for nurturing further research
and patient-care programs. We finally found
what we needed in The Dolphin Experience
in Freeport, Bahamas. Now the dream of providing
dolphin-assisted therapy is a reality!
The resulting 4-day intensive program
features select teams of therapists working
together to address the specific health
concerns of each individual.
Past research has shown that no more than
thirty minutes a day is the optimal amount
of time for a patient to spend with the
dolphins. Therefore, participants will spend
approximately that amount of time in multiple-therapist
sessions in the water where dolphins are
present and free to interact with the group
as they wish. The remainder of the day will
be multi-therapist sessions either on land
or in the water, as the groups decide.
The cost per person is $4,500 plus all
expenses such as travel, hotel, transportation
and meals. Participants are also asked to
complete pre- and post-program evaluations
of their experience for research purposes.
